As the director of creative services for Major League Baseball, Industrial Design alumnus Gary Taylor (CCAD 1998) is no stranger to high-profile graphic design. But his latest project, redesigning his high school’s logo, is what has landed him a profile in The Springfield News-Sun.
In a commentary by Kermit Rowe, Northeastern High School principal Mark Klopfenstein (and Taylor’s former cross country coach) laid out the school’s plan for Taylor’s design.
“This logo, you can take parts of it to use for different things: For a T-shirt, for letterhead," Klopfenstein said in the piece. "We’re going to put it on the gym floor this summer. It’s a lot more flexible that way. It will be kind of neat to have one logo that is designed not only by a Northeastern grad, but by someone that’s associated with Major League Baseball.”
“To me, it’s a job in the field I love, and that’s more important than anything,” Taylor said in the article. “But when you sit back and think about what you are doing, how many people who would die to have your job, you get overwhelmed with it.”
Another moment that was overwhelming for Taylor: finding CCAD. “Deborah Kelly (one of [his high school] art teachers) took me over to see CCAD. That was a big eye-opener. That was it … I got a scholarship to go there, and I have been hooked ever since,” Taylor said in the article.
