Alumnus shares stories of success in quarterly newsletter

Works by alumnus Jon Hair are on display worldwide.

The Spring 2011 newsletter from Advertising & Graphic Design alumnus Jon Hair (CCAD 1976-1978) hit our desks hard—which makes sense seeing as it details the sculptures he’s completed for Lenoir-Rhyne University, The Bridge Street Conference Facility, University of Cincinnati, California State University, and High Point University.

Hair carved the world’s largest sculpture of Martin Luther (12 feet tall and 14,000 pounds) from a single block of gray granite for Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. The Bridge Street Conference Facility near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center is now home to three 8-foot tall bronze statues created by Hair. The statues of an Apollo astronaut, Army Ranger, and helicopter pilot “are a tribute to the men and women of the armed forces and Computer Sciences Corporation’s long-standing commitment to excellence in providing its services to the US military establishment,” the article said.

Hair’s other recent creations: a 15-foot tall, two-ton bronze Bearcat for University of Cincinnati; an 8-foot tall matador which will be unveiled in August at California State University North Ridge; and 12 bronze bench sculptures of prominent historical figures (among them Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, and Leonardo DaVinci) at High Point University. He is currently completing a commission for Appalachian State’s “Aspire” sculpture.

Hair’s sculptures appear in galleries, private collections, and on a growing number of corporate and college campuses from Beijing to Hollywood.
