Alum’s work celebrates black history

Columbus College of Art & Design grad Dean Mitchell (Illustration, 1980) is one of four black painters whose work is on view for the start of RJD Gallery’s 2020 season in the exhibition A Time and a Place - The Layers of Black History.

The Bridgehampton, New York gallery begins each year with a group show highlighting contemporary African-American painters whose work reveals black Americans’ experiences. Mitchell’s work at RJD gallery features intimate portraits of Buffalo Soldiers from the Civil War.

A Time and a Place, which has drawn coverage from such outlets as Hamptons Art Hub,  is on view through March 16. 

Mitchell is a contemporary realism painter whose work has drawn comparisons to such artists as Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. A Pittsburgh native now living in Tampa, Florida, Mitchell also has work on view at the Albany Museum of Art. The solo exhibition, Looking at America and Painting How I Want, What I Want, and How I See It, is on view through March 28, 2020, reported Fine Art Connoisseur magazine.
