Art Fair & Marketplace preview: beauty in experimentation
Get to know some of the talented Columbus College of Art & Design students and alumni whose work will be available for purchase at the Art Fair & Marketplace on Saturday, Dec. 2. Find other entries in the series here and here.
Caitlin Crum (Fine Arts, 2017) has been busy. In addition to getting ready for this year’s CCAD Art Fair & Marketplace, her experiments in abstraction are currently on view in Cleveland’s Satellite Gallery as part of a group exhibition. The last few months have also seen her participating in the German Village Art Crawl (picking up coverage from City Pulse Columbus along the way), showing work at a pop-up show at the Mac Worthington Gallery, and creating commercial art for such clients as the law firm Roetzel & Andress.
Read more from Crum below, and find additional examples of her work on Facebook and Instagram.
What can people expect to see from you at the Art Fair & Marketplace?
I will be selling Abstract Expressionist Scientific Paintings. (I know, it’s a mouthful.) The theory I have behind my work is that I have complete control of the pigments and the palette, but not what happens when I pour the paint on the canvas.
What’s your philosophy/perspective behind your work?
The most exciting part of making my art is the surprise of what comes out of all of my experimentation. I have always had a problem of over-working some of my painting in the past; with these new paintings as soon as the paint has dried, they feel instantly complete. My paintings are priced at $25 – $700.
Why did you want to participate in CCAD’s Art Fair & Marketplace? What kind of significance does it have to be selected for it?
This is my third CCAD Art Fair. I wanted to promote my business, but also, CCAD will always be my home away from home. It means so much that I was selected to be a part of this art fair — it means I still have what it takes to stand out and break the mold like CCAD showed me.
How has your CCAD education influenced the work you will be offering for sale?
My CCAD education has helped me set myself apart from others and to do things others might not think of.
