Carmen Winant’s monumental ‘birth’ at MoMA

Childbirth — universal and yet still cloaked in mystery — is a subject of fascination for artist, writer, and History of Art & Visual Culture Assistant Professor Carmen Winant, who made her Museum of Modern Art debut this spring with My Birth, a site-specific collage of images of women giving birth on view through August 2018 as part of the exhibition Being: New Photography 2018.

My Birth, which is also a new book by Winant, has earned praise from the likes of Vogue, which called her MoMA installation “monumental,” in a Q&A feature.

The book and exhibition “make childbirth radically visible,” wrote The New Yorker of Winant’s new works.
