CCAD goes to Mars

Studying at Columbus College of Art & Design is out of this world. No, really. Industrial Design students in CCAD’s Design Innovation and Culture class are working on a project called CCAD Goes to Mars. The 14 students in the class are working to create engaging physical and virtual experiences that bring life on Mars to life for people on Earth. Their goal is to inspire young people to pursue Mars-related endeavors (or career paths). The students have evolved the idea of STEM to be STEAM’D, allowing ideas to incorporate both art and design.

As part of the project, the students in the class have worked with a number of leading experts, including COSI Chief Scientist Paul Sutter and Director of Experience Design Erik Burdock, and Loren Stone, CEO of Autonomy Hub and Vice President of Robotics Education at the Tesla Foundation. The class has also gone on tours of companies and organizations ranging from COSI to Roto and Boss. And they’ve worked with the 3D team at WD Partners, specifically Elliot Vian, Associate Manager, Visualization Services, who will be teaching several seminars on virtual and augmented reality.

The students are planning to launch their project with an exhibition opening at CCAD in February 2018.
