While living in Italy, CCAD grad Susana Madrid (Fashion Design, 2010) was inspired to launch her own luxury shoe line that embodies the “made in Italy” artistry and craftsmanship she so admires.

How did you launch your own international shoe line?

“Having my own line is something I’ve wanted for a while,” notes Madrid. “I pursued a graduate degree in fashion design in Milano and had the opportunity to work designing shoes for Neil Barrett. I fell in love with the design and production processes, and that’s when the idea of starting my line really took shape.” With her boyfriend’s and her family’s support, she went for it!

Q&A

How has CCAD helped you succeed?

"CCAD showed me that if you really want something, you can work and make it happen. I valued the opportunity to stretch out of comfort zones and try new creative outlets."

Can you describe the kinds of shoes you make?

“We are reinventing ‘basics,’ offering flats, mid-heels, and high heels with personality. I want to design shoes that inspire the wearer to dance through life.”

“I carry a notebook and take pictures of things that inspire me for color, for shapes, or technique.” says Madrid, who was raised in Colombia surrounded by colors. That energy and tropical vibe are definitely evident in her work.

What’s next for you?

"This year I want to focus on more brand awareness and having more presence in boutiques worldwide. Susana Madrid shoes are currently sold at Printemps in Paris and online at susanamadrid.com. You can also find them at the THREAD Boutique in Grandview, Ohio."
