CCAD Stories: Alanta Slone
For Alanta Slone (Fashion Design, 2019), inspiration comes in all forms. The off-whites, creams, tans, browns, and mauvey pinks of the initial color scheme for her CCAD Fashion Show collection were inspired by flowers from her grandmother’s funeral, which she could not attend due to a study abroad opportunity at the London College of Fashion. “It was really sad at first, but I thought this is something I can turn into a good thing,” Slone says.
Tell us about your collection for the 2019 CCAD Fashion Show, happening Friday, May 10, 2019, at CCAD.
For my collection, I started out thinking about lingerie and how I could incorporate it in unexpected ways. I interned at La Senza last year, at kind of a cool time, where we were exploring ways to wear lingerie as outerwear. I was also inspired by menswear, specifically the trend of women wearing men’s clothes as their own. My collection has a lot of menswear stripes.
What’s your favorite piece from your collection?
The corset pants. They were a little tricky because you’re normally supposed to make them for a model and fit them as they go on the runway. But, I made mine in my tailoring class because I wanted them to be more tailored. But a form’s torso is tinier than a person’s, so I had to search for the perfect model for that perfect fit.
How much time did spend on your collection?
My collection was my baby. On weekdays, I usually worked from 7 in the evening to 2 in the morning. On weekends, the hours were longer. On one Sunday, I spent from noon to 2 in the morning working steadily.
What are you hoping to do after graduation?
I don’t have anything set in stone, but I’m hoping to stay at La Senza for a couple years and then start my own business—a trend forecasting company, kind of like WGSN. I’m on the concept team at La Senza and I get sneak peeks at a lot of different trend books from different forecasting companies.
