CCAD Students Win Big at 2020 National ADDY Awards
You can have your Tonys, Emmys, and Oscars. In the ad world, it’s all about the ADDYs—or, as they are officially known, the American Advertising Awards. It’s one of the industry's largest creative competitions, whose three tiers (local, district, and national) attract nearly 35,000 professional and student entries each year.
Entrants from local chapters vie to receive a gold ADDY Award, recognition as the very best in their markets. Local winners of first or second place prizes (gold or silver ADDYs) then compete with other clubs in one of 15 regional district competitions. (CCAD is in District 5, which comprises Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia.) Gold ADDY winners from each district are then forwarded to the National American Advertising Awards.
This year, CCAD rocked the American Advertising Federation’s annual award competitions at local, regional, and national levels. A total 25 CCAD projects were recognized for their creative excellence in student and professional categories. Five students won Gold Addys for two projects respectively at the District 5 level, propelling them to the American Advertising Awards National Competition on Friday, June 26, 2020 where these students were recognized once again for their superior work.
“It is an honor to be competing at a national level,” says Advertising & Graphic Design Chair Joshua Bodman. “CCAD rarely has one student in the national competition, but to have five students and two projects represented is truly amazing.”
The Keep America Beautiful Annual Report won a Gold National Addy in the Annual Report or Brochure category. Students who worked on this outstanding project include Lili Aileen (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2021), art director and designer, Alan Alanis (Illustration, 2020), illustrator and designer, Sarah Powell (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2021), designer, and Katie Ooten (Advertising & Graphic Design 2021), designer. The publication was an experiential learning group project in Advanced Typography, taught by Adjunct Faculty Oscar Fernández in the fall 2019 semester with Advertising & Graphic Design and Illustration students.
Says Bodman, “At CCAD we take pride in offering real experiences in the classroom. This past year we partnered with Keep Ohio Beautiful organization to create their annual report. The project took complex information and made it easier to understand through illustration, infographics, and visualizing data.”
Also, Anita Hernandez (Advertising & Graphic Design 2020) received a Silver National Addy and the National Judges Award in the Packaging category for redesigning a new concept for LӒRABAR.
In late March, CCAD student projects won five awards at the District 5 competition. The LӒRABAR packaging concept by Anita Herdandez won Best in Show. Two other entries won gold ADDYS: The Keep America Beautiful Annual Report by the team of Lili Aileen, Alan Alanis, Sarah Powell, and Katie Ooten and This is Me direct marketing concept from Emily Sirota (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2021). Two projects also won silver ADDYS: “SPOOF” guerilla marketing campaign from Dae Hyun Baek (Advertising & Graphic Design 2020) and Jinwoo Seo (Advertising & Graphic Design 2020) and Hermès (Future Mobility App) digital creative technology by Dae Hyun Baek.
Entry in Columbus’ local competition was the first step toward winning a national ADDY. On Feb. 28 at the Columbus Museum of Art, CCAD took home 20 ADDYs—six gold, 12 silver, one Best in Show, and one Judge’s Choice, for its 140th anniversary publication—at the local competition in both Student and Professional divisions.
