Celebrating a genius of black history

As we celebrate Black History Month this month, we recognize the contributions of the many outstanding black students who have attended Columbus College of Art & Design, including the late Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, a heralded artist who combined traditional art materials with found objects and everyday items such as buttons, cloth, and music box innards to create 2D and 3D works.

Robinson, a MacArthur genius grant recipient who grew up on the Near East Side, died in 2015, but her legacy lives on in ongoing collections and exhibitions in Columbus and points beyond, including Hammond Harkins Galleries’ 20th-anniversary exhibition, 3 Artists: Griffith, Hamilton, Robinson. On view through Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, the show features work by Robinson; the late Denny Griffith, painter and beloved former president of CCAD; and landscape painter Paul Hamilton, himself a CCAD grad (Illustration, 1988). Read CityScene magazine's coverage of the exhibition here.

Here's a visual guide to places where you can find Robinson's work on view in- and outside of Columbus:
