Fine Arts alum's glass work in solo show in Japan
Mixed-media works by Fine Arts alumnus Douglas Black (CCAD 1990) are on display in a solo show at the Niki Club Resort and Spa in Nasu, Japan, through June 29.
The works included in the exhibition, titled River of Dreams, are the result of Black's three-month artist residency in the glass studio at the world-renowned resort.
After living in Japan for more than 23 years without access to a glass studio, Black rekindled a passion during the residency program that he said was first nurtured at CCAD.
"As a student at CCAD, I was always immersed in either the glass studio or the adjacent ceramic studio, exploring ways to combine these elements," he said. "It was an incredibly fulfilling experience to regain access to glass [during the residency program]. This gift of time [allowed me to] revisit the source of my own creative passions."
Black presented his new artwork and led a mixed-media and installation workshop titled Nature Is Universal Language during a three-day seminar at the Niki Club Resort June 7–9.
