Good eats at CCAD: An inside look at the cafeteria
By Katy Daiber
CCAD's Market (Cafeteria) has a variety of food for students, it's open for community members as well. Freshman who live on campus, automatically get a lot of swipes on their ID as a meal plan. But the Market also has student discounts for those who only want to dine every once in a while.
The Cafeteria has two stations that are always open, the salad bar and deli bar. At the salad bar there is often spinach, romaine lettuce, applesauce, yogurt, some kind of fruit like pineapple or melon slices or grapes, and other salad toppings like chopped carrots, bacon, chicken, peas, cheese, and salad dressings. The deli bar has different types of deli meat and sandwich toppings like peanut butter, jelly, butter, and cream cheese. There are also cereal dispensers holding AppleJacks, Froot Loops, Raisin Brand, Trix, Lucky Charms, Rice Crispies, Nature Valley Granola, among others. In the bread baskets there are bagels, english muffins, tortillas, and bread to make sandwiches, wraps, and toast in the toaster oven. There is also a waffle maker and a panini press.
The grill section is also always open. It has grilled cheese, hot dogs, corn dogs, chicken patties and breasts, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and turkey burgers. There are also buns, condiments, and toppings. Curly fries, sweet potatoe fries, and onion rings are also available. There is also a station of pizzas and where you can make your own. My friend and I love making personal veggie pizzas.
The "Noodle Fix" station is only available on weekdays when Chef Reece is in. Students wait in line to tell him what they want, and he hand prepares it right there. It's often pasta, sea food, rice, and other special meals, but it's always delicious.
The Dessert stand has awesome cookies, pieces of cake, brownies, pastries, and more, depending on the day. Also, apples, bananas, and oranges are always available in the fruit stand.
The Specials counter varies on meal time but theres always tasty, hot, and nutritious food such as tilapia, rice, green beans, chicken breast, tofu, and more at dinner and lunch. At breakfast and brunch, this counter normally houses scrambled eggs, pancakes, french toast, bacon, biscuits and gravy, sausage, and tater tots.
Everyone loves ice cream right? Well at CCAD, there's a freezer full of huge ice cream tubs from the brand. "Velvet." My favorite is the strawberry ice cream because it has chunks of frozen strawberries and is so creamy that it tastes like yogurt.
The best thing about the Market is that it's staffed by culinary professionals who are working on opening their own restaurants someday. Everyone is very kind and friendly, and the market is a great place to catch up with friends and enjoy a quick bite to eat.
