MDes students have designs on a better surgical gown

Columbus College of Art & Design’s Fashion Design students have a well-earned reputation for creating work that catches the eyes of tastemakers from points near and far. But it was work by their peers in CCAD’s Master of Design in Integrative Design program that recently caught the attention of WOSU Public Media.

The MDes candidates were tasked with improving surgical gowns used by healthcare providers. The project comes in partnership with Dublin-based Cardinal Health. Traditional surgical gowns can be perceived as being hot to wear, especially during long surgeries. The MDes candidates have been exploring how new materials, design, and technologies might improve the gowns while keeping the costs down for the disposable products.

WOSU dropped in to see the students at work, testing out some gown prototypes with medical professionals, who provided them with critical feedback to ensure the duds are no duds. Read (and listen to) more about what they discovered in the process here.
