Two drawings by CORE Studio and Photography Professor Hiroshi Hayakawa (Photography, 1995), were accepted into the 59th Mid-States Art Exhibition at Evansville Museum, Evansville, Indiana--one, Vanitas 11, was purchased by the museum. Christopher Burk (Fine Arts, 2000) has been awarded a prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for painting. Such grants enable artists to create new work, purchase needed materials, and pay for studio rent (and any other personal or medical expenses) and are intended to provide them with concentrated time to prepare for exhibitions and other professional opportunities. CCAD family members know Jeff Fisher, CCAD Senior Vice President for Finance & Planning and Chief Fiscal Officer, as someone who has played a pivotal role in campus development, overseeing its growth from two buildings to 14 on a nine-acre campus. Wednesday, Nov. 14, Fisher, who will retire in the spring, was given an Unsung Hero Award at the annual meeting of the Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts for his work benefitting downtown Columbus. CORE Studies Adjunct Instructor Katheryn Fisher, known as ¡Katie B Funk!, (MFA, 2018) has work on view in Come Together, an exhibition at the Dayton Society of Artists. Her work in the all-woman show, which runs through Saturday, Dec. 15, is called junk dazzle silhouettes. Read more here.
Sola En Cuba, an exhibition of work by second-year Master of Fine Arts candidate Alissa Ohashi, is on view through Saturday, Dec. 1, at Upper Cup Coffee Co. 79 Parsons Ave. The solo show presents Ohashi’s documentary photography taken in Havana.
Beeler Gallery Director of Exhibitions Jo-ey Tang is now represented by New York gallery Lyles & King, which also announced it had added artist Thomas Fougeirol to its roster, reported ARTnews (an announcement that was also picked up by Hyperallergic). Haley Anne Thompson (Comics & Narrative Practice, 2022), was in her final year of high school when she was asked to create illustrations for the children’s book Scout Goes to School, about a mischief-prone therapy dog. The book, written by her former junior high teacher, Barbara Jo Almendinger, based on a therapy dog of the same name, is available for purchase on Amazon and elsewhere. Read more here.
Assistant Professor of History of Art & Visual Culture Aaron Petten presented “Dada and its Impacts: The Counter-Enlightenment Impulses in Modern Art after World War I” on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Columbus State Community College as part of the event “War Changes Everything: The Cultural Aftermath of World War I at Its Centennial.”
