Excitement builds for the 2018 CCAD Fashion Show, and alumni get noticed for a film, interior design boutique, and Google Doodle work for International Women’s Day. Get the skinny on what’s happening on campus, in Columbus, and points well beyond.
Columbus Monthly magazine attended and wrote about the CCAD Fashion Show Sneak Peak held at Juniper last week, which featured five student designers as well as visiting artist Emily Spivack. You can see the students’ full collections at the CCAD Fashion Show on May 11 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Early bird tickets are on sale through March 31, and funds raised at the event support student scholarships. Read more here.
Isuri M. Hewage (Illustration, 2012) was included in the world-renowned Google Doodle for International Women’s Day. The 2018 IWD Sequential Art Anthology Doodle highlighted 12 women artists from 12 different countries to tell stories about inspirational women in their communities. Hewage’s contribution starred her character Aarthi the Amazing, an adventure story “about a day in a life of an extraordinary fisherwoman; who braves the rough seas to catch fish; works day and night; earns the extra rupee to feed and support her children,” Hewage wrote on her Instagram page. “Aarthi’s story was inspired by the daily lives and the daily struggles of fisherwomen in Sri Lanka.” Read more here.
Don’t miss Cleveland.com’s story about Nick Cavalier’s story about Gotta Grove Records, a vinyl pressing plant that opened in 2009 right as the vintage revival heated up. Cavalier (Media Studies, 2009) made a documentary about the Cleveland business, and his film was selected to open the Short. Sweet. Sonja Thams (Interior Design, 2016) spoke with Cincinnati’s City Beat newspaper for a feature on Deerhaus, the new design-conscious, small-batch, and environmentally friendly boutique in Findlay Market that she co-founded with her husband Benjamin Deering. Read more here.
The CCAD students designers and artists who created artwork for the Short North construction barricades were applauded in 10TV and featured in The Columbus Dispatch for their contributions to showing how public art can play a unique role in uplifting a community’s mood. Read more here and here.
