Freelance illustrator and comics artist A. D’Amico (Illustration, 2016) first worked with writer Mikki Kendall on a comic for the anthology Spitball 2 at CCAD. More recently, D'Amico and Kendall went on to collaborate on a new graphic novel—Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists: A Graphic History of Women's Fight for Their Rights, which will be published this November. Bruce Hull (Advertising & Graphic Design, 1998), a layout design artist with the Ohio Department of Transportation, has created the state’s road maps for nearly 20 years. Hull was recently featured by the Associated Press for his creative and artistic takes on paper maps. Read more here.
New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced the recipients and finalists of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program, which it has administered for the past 33 years with leadership support from New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Among this year's NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellows is Derick Whitson (Photography, 2014), who was recognized for his work in Photography. The highly competitive Fellowship Program makes unrestricted cash grants of $7,000 to artists working in 15 disciplines, awarding five per year on a triennial basis. This year's recipients and finalists were selected by discipline-specific peer panels from an applicant pool of 2,542. Read more here.
Destiny Ryan (Fine Arts, 2020) was selected as one of 40 finalists for the 2019 AXA Art Prize. Ryan was selected out of a pool of more than 500 applicants in the figurative art competition. Their work will be exhibited in California, at the San Francisco Art Institute; in Chicago, at the Richard Gray Gallery; and in New York at the New Work Academy of Art. The 40 finalists are also eligible for a $10,000 first-place prize from jurors. Read more here.

Works by Photography Chair Darren Lee Miller have been acquired by the Drake Well Museum and Park, which is managed by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. While much of the museum’s permanent collection celebrates the history of the oil industry, Miller’s images complicate those stories. Read more here.
Animation Chair and Assistant Professor Charlotte Belland’s art-making, which often includes works inspired by animals, was also featured in a video in the ongoing Greater Columbus Arts Council “Art Makes Columbus” series. Watch it here.
Grad Michelle Stitzlein (Interior Design, 1989) is completing an 8-by-12-foot sculpture as part of a residency at Denali National Park that began in August 2018. Earlier this year, Stitzlein exhibited her sculptural work, made of found materials and sculpted to resemble dynamic, natural forms, at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. Portions of Gay Street on CCAD’s campus took on a more modern look thanks to the city of Columbus’ Creative Campus updates and the addition of elements such as pedestrian-friendly lounge chairs, as detailed in Columbus Monthly. Read more here.
CCAD Alumni Award winner Sugandh Agrawal (Industrial Design, 2005), who founded the award-winning luxury handbag brand Gunas in 2009, secured $250,000 to develop its first foray into the vegan beauty industry, reported such outlets as VegNews, Fashion Network, and Cosmetics Design. Gunas, which closed its first seed round at a $5 million valuation, will be producing a line of artisanal soaps made with olive oil and volcanic ash. Read more here.
Daric Gill (Fine Arts, 2004) is one of the artists with work in Greater Columbus 2019, an exhibition running through Sept. 29 at Columbus Museum of Art in partnership with the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Gill was recently featured by Columbus Underground. Read more here.
CCAD grad Kelsey McClellan (Photography, 2012) and creative partner Michelle Maguire have teamed up with Walter Green (formerly of Lucky Peach magazine) on a new book, How to Eat Everything, which will be published in 2020. Read more here.
Illustration Adjunct Faculty Mark Riedy (Advertising & Graphic Design, 1979) was featured by the Delaware Gazette after he was selected by Major League Baseball to create two pieces of art for the Cincinnati Reds to be displayed and then auctioned for charity. Artists were selected to create a custom Louisville Slugger bat and a Fender Stratocaster for each of the 30 MLB teams. Read more here.
Beeler Gallery and its Director of Exhibitions, Jo-ey Tang, was featured by the travel site ConfettiTravelCafe.com, which said of Season One at Beeler, “This is the art that art students—and the rest of us—need to see.” Read more here.
The Vanderelli Room, a gallery owned and operated by grad AJ Vanderelli (Fine Arts, 2008), was named one of the 10 best galleries in Columbus by local news channel WCMH. Watch more here.
In connection with CCAD’s 140th anniversary, alum Jack Gramann (Fine Arts, 2010) and Fine Arts Adjunct Faculty Nate Ricciuto are featured in an exhibition at Hawk Galleries. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Saturday, July 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Read more here.
