7 p.m.: Doors open
8 p.m.: CXC keynote begins
9–10 p.m.: Reception
Join CCAD for CXC’s premier interview with Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comics series. O’Malley will discuss his internationally best-selling and influential masterwork Scott Pilgrim—and more—in a career-spanning interview with renowned comics journalist John F. Kelly. O’Malley’s visit also will include an invite-only informal lunch with CCAD students earlier in the week.
O’Malley’s six-volume Scott Pilgrim comic has made him a comics superstar. The series was adapted into the cult-classic movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World in 2010 by director Edgar Wright, was made into a video game from Ubisoft, and is enjoying continued success as the hit Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. O’Malley’s other works include his first original graphic novel, Lost at Sea, and the fantasy/cooking graphic novel Seconds.
Kelly is publisher of the quarterly comics zine, Dummy; writer for The Comics Journal; and former executive director of the ToonSeum, Pittsburgh’s museum of comic art.
This keynote conversation is free and open to the public, but the event is expected to sell out and preregistration via Eventbrite is required. Following the keynote, CCAD will host a reception for attendees in conjunction with a closing reception for the final day of Spitball X: Ten Years of the Spitball Anthology at CCAD, a Beeler Gallery exhibition that celebrates 10 years of the student-designed publication that pairs the college’s emerging comics artists with professional writers.
Please note: O’Malley will not be signing at this keynote event. However, he will be signing earlier in the day, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the lobby of the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Main Branch, 96 S. Grant Ave., as part of CXC.
