CCAD Canzani Center Screening Room | 60 Cleveland Ave.
Born in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1977, Lisa Jarrett spent her formative years in Texas, Minnesota, and New York. Her experience as a Black American growing up in such places with various, often conflicting, political climates, as well as the influences of her upbringing in a post-Civil Rights and increasingly so-called “post-racial” America are apparent in her work, which confronts ideas of racial difference and perceptions of racial equity.
Jarrett’s work is typically centered around deconstructing, defragmenting, reconstructing, and reassembling her personal experiences as a Black woman in America into projects that ask viewers to consider their own roles in present-day race relations. She lives in Portland, Oregon, where she teaches classes in art and social practice at Portland State University’s School of Art + Design.
