Sonya Fix teaches writing, oral communication, and theory & criticism for ESL learners at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She received a B.A. from Eastern Michigan University in English Linguistics and Literature as a Presidential Scholar and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from New York University, where she was a MacCracken Fellow and Dean's Dissertation Fellow. Fix's sociolinguistic research focuses on racial, ethnic, and regional variation in American English, second dialect acquisition, inter-ethnic group communication, and language, identity and subjectivity. She has published articles in the journals of Language and Communication, Lingua, the University of Pennsylvania Working Papers in Linguistics. She has spent her career teaching ESL, TESOL methods, and linguistics to diverse post-secondary, undergraduate, and graduate populations. At CCAD, Fix co-advises the International Student Association and provides programming to help new international students acclimate linguistically, culturally, and socially to CCAD life and learning.
