Alumnus selected for university sculpture show
Joseph Gargasz's "Taliman #2" sculpture
Fine arts alumnus Joseph Gargasz (CCAD 1995) exhibited his works Talisman #1 and Talisman #2 at the annual Sculpture in the Garden 2012 show at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His 400-pound cast concrete sculptures were among 45 pieces selected by a committee for display last fall at the North Carolina Botanical Garden.
"The Talisman series is my experiment to examine the negative spaces found in everyday discarded consumer materials," Gargasz said in his artist statement. "Appliance packaging, cardboard boxes, plastic containers, and shopping bags provide interesting negative spaces that I then cast concrete into."
Gargasz is currently the director of exhibition design at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University in Atlanta.
