Cartoon Crossroads Columbus is coming to CCAD

Cartoons are taking over Columbus this week, from Wednesday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 16, thanks to Cartoon Crossroads Columbus. Columbus College of Art & Design is pumped to be a part of the festival. (Especially because we have a new Comics & Narrative Practice major coming in fall 2017.) Here are some of the ways CCAD is involved with CXC.

Columbus Metropolitan Club CXC luncheon

Noon. Wednesday, Oct. 12, $45

The Boat House, 679 W. Spring St.

Before the official kickoff of CXC on Wednesday night, guests attending this special event by the Columbus Metropolitan Club will be treated to an early discussion with CXC participants, led by CXC board member and CCAD Assistant Professor Laurrenn McCubbin. Guests include animator Mark Osborne of Kung Fu Panda and The Little Prince, editorial cartoonist Nate Beeler from The Columbus Dispatch, and graphic novelist Ronald Wimberly of Prince Of Cats and Lighten Up. This event costs $45 for the public, and discounts are available.

 

Charles Burns live

Canzani Center at CCAD

Charles Burns is one of the most visually striking artists coming to CXC. He’s a legend of both commercial illustration — from iconic work for Coca-Cola to Iggy Pop album art — and cartooning — his Black Hole is a masterpiece on teenage alienation. Burns will look back on a legendary career that has seen him work with prestigious publishers including RAW Books, Fantagraphics, Kitchen Sink Press, and Pantheon. His talk is a part of the Beeler Gallery Visiting Artists & Scholars Series.

 

Reception & book signing with Charles Burns & Nate Powell

8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, free

Acock Gallery at CCAD

Immediately following his presentation at CCAD’s Canzani Center, Charles Burns will join graphic novelist Nate Powell for a reception and book signing. Powell’s recent New York Times’ bestseller March: Book Three concluded his graphic novel trilogy that documents the Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of Congressman John Lewis, who co-wrote the books with Andrew Aydin. March: Book Three was recently nominated for a National Book Award, and Powell’s original art from the book will adorn the walls of Acock Gallery in this rare chance to have works signed by two generations of influential illustrators.
