Treat yourself (on a budget)

by Cailey Tervo

The life of an art student is rough. Between jobs, class, student organizations, and homework, there isn’t always a lot of time or money to take a break and go do something fun. But remember, it's important to take some time out and treat yourself (even if you are low on cash.) Check out these fun and cheap places to check out around campus!

Thurber House
The historic Thurber House is right down on Jefferson Street. Originally home of the author and cartoonist James Thurber, the Thurber House is now open to the public. Self-guided tours of the home are free, and guided tours are $2.00 for students. And be sure to keep an eye out for their different educational programs, such as their Evening with the Author series.

Art Museum
Can’t get enough art? Then take a walk a cross the street and check out the art museum! CCAD students receive free admission with their student ID. The Columbus Museum of Art reopens to the public on October 25th, so get ready!

The Short North
On the first Saturday of every month, the Short North turns into a Gallery Hop. Grab a group of friends and go out for a fun Saturday night of gallery hopping. The galleries themselves are free, but while you’re in the Short North be sure to bring a few extra bucks for Columbus delicacies such as Mikey's Late Night Slice, DP Dough, Jeni's Ice Cream, and The Melt. The Short North is also home to lots of unique shops, such as Big Fun, Flower Child, Cindy Lou, and Out of the Closet.

Gay Street
If places a bit closer to CCAD are a better option, Gay Street has a growing number of shops and restaurants that are fun and affordable. The Zencha Tea Salon offers tea, pastries, and more! For an extra treat, order the full in–house tea service. Tip-Top Bar and Grill offers burgers, fries, sandwiches, and just about everything else

thats good and tasty at affordable prices. Plus, it’s open late! 39 Below has customizable Fro-Yo, coffee, and a unique lemonade bar. Café Brioso serves high quality coffee, tea, sandwiches, and more.

There’s always something to do around Columbus! On top of these activities, be sure to keep an eye out for Student Affairs and Res Life events that are happening around campus!
