Free money. Fast.
CCAD students who filled out a FAFSA for any portion of the 2020–2021 academic year will receive money—via direct deposit or paper check—from the U.S. government to use as needed. This comes from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, which recognizes that college students likely have incurred additional costs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students due to receive these funds will receive an email from Associate Vice President of Financial Aid & Registration Susan Kannenwischer with info on next steps.
And if you like free stuff...
Don’t forget that through a grant from the state of Ohio, CCAD and the Counseling & Wellness Center are partnering with Yellowbird Foodshed to offer free boxes of fresh produce on a weekly basis. These boxes of nutritious, local food are available for pickup 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays on a first come, first-served basis with your CCAD student ID.
Leadership opportunities for you
Apply to be an Orientation Leader
Orientation Leader applications are open now through Friday, March 5! These positions are crucial to helping new students get the most out of life at CCAD. (Not to mention, it’s great experience for you that future employers will notice.)
Watch the President's Address
CCAD’s President, Dr. Melanie Corn, hosted her semiannual President’s Address to Students Monday, Feb. 15. The talk covered how the CCAD community can stay connected despite the challenges presented by COVID-19. Plus—participants showed off their pets.
Juniors, you're up!

Registration for sophomores (completed 30.0–59.9 credits) runs midnight Monday, March 8–11:59 p.m. Sunday, March 21, and registration for freshmen (completed 0–29.9 credits) is Monday, March 22–11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 4. Live on campus this summer
If you are in need of summer 2021 housing in Design Square Apartments, please complete this Summer 2021 Housing Form by this Friday, March 5, at 5 p.m. (EST). Students currently living in DSA but who do not hold a summer housing contract will need to move out by 1 p.m. Saturday, May 15.
Reminder: Living in DSA this summer does not guarantee space for you in the residence hall this fall. Those with a summer contract must move out of DSA by 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.
Alum scores with co-op
Myles Tanner (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2020) completed his dream co-op in the fall of 2020 with the NBA’s LA Clippers. He worked within the team’s video production and digital media department, making video edits, shooting, developing content strategies, and more.
Tarot for wellness
Join Residence Life and the Counseling & Wellness Center to spend some intentional time reflecting and connecting Thursday, March 4, 6:30–8 p.m. (EST). Participants will virtually draw a tarot card and then spend time reflecting on the meaning of the card in their own journey towards wellness.
ICYMI on IGTV
Dean of Faculty Joshua Butts, PhD and Adjunct Faculty Sierra Austin, PhD, both members of CCAD’s Presidential Commission on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, recently took to IGTV to share details on ongoing anti-oppression training for CCAD faculty.
Mandatory COVID-19 testing
Are you a student regularly accessing campus? Don’t forget you will be required to take a COVID-19 PCR test (an oral rinse) following spring break, on Sunday, March 21, or Monday, March 22. If you are required to participate in this testing program, you received an email in mid-February from Dean of Students and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Athena Sanders on behalf of CCAD’s Testing Management Team.
Temporary return to remote classes
The week following spring break (Monday, March 22–Friday, March 26) will be completely remote for all classes—even hybrid courses—so that CCAD can complete its mandatory COVID-19 testing. Hybrid courses will begin their post-spring break in-person component the week of Monday, April 5; CCAD will resume weekly, mandatory random sample testing the week of April 12.
Got the write stuff?
Consider submitting your work to this year’s Creative Writing Awards. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. (EDT) Monday, March 22, and results will be announced by Monday, April 12. This annual contest for CCAD undergraduates includes three categories: prose (fiction/nonfiction), poetry, and screenwriting. Cash prizes are available.
Get ready for the Art and Design Virtual Career Fair
CCAD invites the classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022 to participate in an art and design-exclusive virtual career fair hosted by the Association for Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), Friday, April 16, 2021, noon to 5 p.m. (EDT). You’ll have the opportunity to connect with employers to discuss opportunities including internships and full-time roles. The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 31.
The most overlooked self-care routine
Having solid social support means having people you can go to when you need to talk. And it’s fair to say having social support has become more important than ever over the past year. Visit CCAD CampusWell for more on these key connections.

Unbeatable exhibition features students & grads
Each February, the Sean Christopher Gallery’s Color of Love-themed show features select works by CCAD undergrad and graduate students. This year’s show, juried by John A Sargent III, featured work by Miku Saeki (Contemporary Crafts, 2021), who took home the “Best in Show” award, as well as Zak Baumker (Studio Art with Emphasis in History of Art & Visual Culture, 2022), River Forest Berry (Studio Art with Emphasis in History of Art & Visual Culture, 2022), Ji Woo Choi (Fine Arts, 2021), Zander Jeney (MFA, 2022), and Rachel Wilkins (Fine Arts, 2024). Their work was complemented by that of four CCAD graduates who had shown work in past Young Hearts exhibitions at the gallery.
A sample of the real world
Since 2013 CCAD has partnered with California-based E. & J. Gallo Winery to provide students such as Angela Guerra-Sapp (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2021) with real-world experience in the classroom and connections that lead to career opportunities.
Tasting Columbus with students & alumni
Indie film producer and Film & Video Adjunct Faculty Stephanie West has tapped CCAD students past and present for her new online series, Tasting Columbus. The documentary show is distributed by 614 Media Group on its social and YouTube channels and explores places to eat in Columbus and is edited by Madison Van Buren (Film & Video, 2020), with some segments edited or directed by Sarah Bieber (Film & Video, 2021), R.J. Davilla (Film & Video, 2022), and Zarek Metz (Film & Video, 2022).

Student Spotlight
Name: Brooke Ripley
Major: Fine Arts
Class year: 2021
Hometown: Convoy, Ohio
Where are you located for the spring semester? Columbus
Favorite spot on campus: Either the lounge area outside of the library or my studio!
Favorite thing to do in Columbus: Walking around Goodale Park at night—there's just something so peaceful about that area.
Last show you binge-watched: Letterkenny
Most-played song on your playlist right now: Graham Coxon's "Walking All Day"
Your time at CCAD in three emojis: 😍😱📚
Your pandemic experience in three emojis: 🐈🌋😫
How your creative practice has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic began: This pandemic has given me an opportunity to play with the way I photograph my art, since everything is digital now, and with what materials I'm working with. Now that I have limited access to the studio, I've had to find mediums that I can work in while sitting on the couch. I've been playing with wax, weaving, and embroidery even though I'm a painter! While this exploration seemed daunting at first, these new materials have given me a new perspective on my paintings.
Current artist/designer crush: Chris Burden!
Favorite thing about CCAD: The wonderful professors—each professor is thoroughly invested in the artistic development of the students here and it makes for a really personal and educational experience.
