A note from your Dean of Students & Title IX Coordinator

We are two weeks into the 2020–2021 academic year, and while it’s soon still, the diversity of our creative community is steadily coming into sharp focus. Before we get too far into the fall semester, I want to extend a warm, virtual welcome to all the new students starting their artistic journey with us. And even though we're not on campus, I hope the energy of this new year sparks rich ideas and collaborative ventures as we navigate this remote environment. I look forward to the time when we can be together in person, but for now, stay safe and enjoy learning and getting to know yourself and your classmates better as we embark on what is shaping up to be a fantastic school year.

—Athena Sanders, Dean of Students & Title IX Coordinator

P.S. Fall Break is coming back

One more thing ... you asked, and we listened: Fall Break makes its return Monday, Oct. 19, and Tuesday, Oct. 20. There will be no classes on these days, and labs will be closed. CCAD offices will remain open for business.

This fall break is intended to do just that—give you a break in the midst of what we know is an especially challenging fall semester, and comes as part of CCAD's ongoing healthy creativity initiative.

Please use this time to unplug. To step away from your screens. To recover, catch up, address any of your personal needs, and most of all, to practice some valuable self-care.

—Athena

Learn how healthy practices will make you better at your craft

This Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. (EDT), be there for President’s Lecture Series: Ryan “Yanoe” Sarfati, a conversation between CCAD’s President, Dr. Melanie Corn, and the LA-based artist. Sarfati has found success moving from graffiti to fine arts and work for such clients as Apple, Facebook, Google, and Nike (not to mention The Journey, a large, eye-catching mural in Columbus’ Short North Arts District). And he credits self-care and healthy creative practices for his successes. Sarfati will discuss how he uses tools such as meditation and sobriety to support his rigorous practice and maintain physical and emotional health.
This visit, originally scheduled for March, comes as part of CCAD’s healthy creativity initiative. Tickets are free and available to everyone, but must be reserved in advance.

Constitution Day is Sept. 17

Each year, the U.S. marks Constitution Day and Citizenship Day on Sept. 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, and to “recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.” Learn more about this important day by visiting the Library of Congress online.

Explore campus on Instagram

While CCAD is limiting the number of people we have on our campus, we’ve created a cool, interactive feature on Instagram so you can take a virtual tour around campus. Check it out—you just might see some familiar faces!

Get going

The Supply Store is on the move

In the coming months, you’ll be able to find the art supplies and CCAD swag you’re looking for in one place: Ampersand Emporium.

After 40 years in Kinney Hall, CCAD’s Supply Store will merge with Ampersand Emporium and provide a new and improved shopping experience, whether you’re on the hunt for art supplies, CCAD gear, or simply a bottled water or a tasty snack. In addition to giving CCAD community members a one-stop shopping experience, this move will free up academic space in Kinney Hall. (More to come on that to come.)

We expect our move will be final by Jan. 1, 2021. We can’t wait to see you back on campus so you can check it out!

Get to the head of the class with #CCADcreateaway

Share your work, and see what other CCAD community members are up to, on Instagram using the hashtag #CCADcreateaway. You just might see it featured here and elsewhere on CCAD’s social media. For instance, here, Jessica Loper (Fine Arts, 2023) practices the Loomis Method to create heads and faces as part of Adjunct Faculty David Groff's introduction to portrait painting class.

CCAD goes live: Jane Smith

Hear how Jane Smith (Illustration, 2002) developed a career in children’s book illustration when she joins Adjunct Faculty Brian Williams (Illustration, 2003) in a CCAD goes live conversation Thursday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. (EDT) on Instagram. Smith is the author-illustrator of the six-book Chloe Zoe, and her forthcoming picture books Hello, New House (Albert Whitman & Co.) and Miss Meow (West Margin Press) will be released in fall 2020 and fall 2021 respectively.

Smith appears as part of the CCAD goes live series, in which the college invites guest expert artists, designers, and innovators to share their insights and answer questions from the CCAD community. These interactive sessions are part of CCAD’s ongoing commitment to scholarship, inquiry, and creative thinking.

Help in getting your voice heard

Have ideas on how students could help make CCAD a better place for all? Consider attending a Student Government Association meeting to share your thoughts and hear more about what’s happening around the college. The SGA functions as a voice of and advocate for CCAD’s student body and meets Mondays at 11 a.m. (EDT). Join the conversation on Google Meet.

Check out this easy way to return books

If you’ve borrowed something from Packard Library, there’s a new, no-contact way to return it: a book return in the Canzani Canyon. (That's the courtyard space right outside of the library's home in Canzani Center.) Please allow three business days before items are checked in, as library staff are quarantining returns for safety. The library does not charge fines, so there will not be a penalty for this delay.
