Just the other day, I was walking through the Canzani center at CCAD and I walked over to a section of the building where I remembered spending part of my New Student Orientation. That time of my life, where I was first introduced to CCAD, doesn't feel that long ago, yet it was an entire two and a half years ago. I remember so clearly the first time I got the tour around campus and scheduled my first semester classes. CCAD has really been a wild ride for me. It's not over yet though, and that's just as exciting to me now as it was then.

Last Friday, the Animation Student Collective had the chance to speak with New York City based alumnus Marcus Morris, who was here this week as an artist-in-residence. Morris is a photographer and post-production artist who has worked extensively with the fashion industry and has often collaborated on projects with London-based animator, illustrator and art director Jo Ratcliffe (including the collaborative work the two did on Lady Gaga’s music video “Applause”).

Animation students typically know everyone else who studies animation. This is most likely because of the limited space Animation has for classrooms, so we tend to see everyone from time to time in the same few rooms as always. Also, there's the fact that a lot of animation projects and assignments require the use of the labs for completion. So, even when we don't have a class, there's a good chance we can be found in the labs as usual.

This past week, the animation department had the chance to listen to a CCAD alum, Barbara Benas. Barbara is a former animation student of CCAD who now has worked with many animation studios (such as Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon) and is currently located in New York.

I will never forget June 26th.
Early Friday morning, I woke up and immediately flipped to the news. Slowly people were gathering outside of SCOTUS, also anxiously awaiting the decision. At 10am interns poured out of the building to alert the press. And then it was announced.
I had to hear it twice to believe it had really happened, "the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of marriage equality". I was met with a rush of both relief and pride in my country.

For me, CCAD just made sense. I grew up in Columbus and most of my family is here. Being so close to such a great school was pretty convenient. In my later years of high school, I started to take the college search more seriously and amped up my portfolio. I received a generous scholarship that solidified my decision. I also had friends from high school going to CCAD, which made the transition less scary.

Over the weekend I took part in CCAD's "Before They’re Famous" Spring Art Sale. I teamed up with my friend and fellow animation senior, Hillary Hastings! It was the first time either of us sold our work, but we did very well.
The highlight of the day was when a small baby saw my puppy stickers. Her face lit up and she immediately took out her binky to say, "woof!".

As an aspiring character animator, being able to sketch live animals is an invaluable experience. It’s not only helpful to learn their structures, but also to study their movements. A big part of my life here at CCAD is the Animation Student Collective, and one of the many activities we plan are outings to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for live sketching sessions.
