When CCAD Illustration Junior Mackenzie Fields was a teenager, she was sexually assaulted.
She developed an anxiety disorder, and to cope, the Hamilton, Ohio, native created comics.
Fields recently published a graphic novel called FriendQuest that uses metaphors to tackle sexual assault.

Ask anyone on campus how they ended up there, and you'll hear a different story. My “why I do art” story is pretty typical. I grew up watching animated movies and cartoons; not soon after I discovered it was someone’s job to make those cartoons. When I got into high school, I learned that I could have that job. And as senior year approached, the pressure was on all students to choose a career and a school. But not on me. I knew that I wanted to go to art school.

The final finals week is here, and the general consensus around campus is “ugh.” There are few smiles to be found; the passionate gleam of inspiration in the eye has long since faded.

I am very much a small town girl. I moved around the country quite a bit when I was younger; I never really stayed in one town for more than a year. Eventually my family settled in the small town of Washington, Illinois, and I’ve called Washington my home for about ten years. It was there where I met lifelong friends, fell in love with art, and had my first job.

CCAD alumnus Erik Maell (Class of '94) has spent the past 2 decades working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, creating artwork for international clients such as Lucasfilm Ltd, The Walt Disney Corporation, Universal Studios, Topps Trading Card Company, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics. As a fine artist, he has exhibited his paintings in many solo and group shows across the United States and in Europe.

CCAD's Market (Cafeteria) has a variety of food for students, it's open for community members as well. Freshman who live on campus, automatically get a lot of swipes on their ID as a meal plan. But the Market also has student discounts for those who only want to dine every once in a while.

If you love comics, make comics, or study comics, Comics Crossroads Columbus was the place to be from October 1st-3rd! I had the time of my life both attending CXC and volunteering for it. I also drew a few quick comics based off some of my experiences!
